Imported aluminium windows: what makes them compliant in Australia

Checked 27 October 2026

Yes, imported aluminium windows are legal in Australia, as long as each window meets AS 2047, the glass meets AS 1288, and the supplier can give you an AS 2047 test report from an accredited laboratory for the series. Where the window is made does not matter to your certifier; the paperwork does. Ask for it before you pay a deposit.

The checklist

  • AS 2047 test report for each window series, from an accredited lab (NATA in Australia, or an ILAC-recognised lab overseas). It shows the serviceability and ultimate wind pressures, water penetration and air infiltration results.
  • Wind rating to suit your site. Your engineer or building surveyor sets the site wind classification under AS 4055 (N1–N6, or C1–C4 in cyclonic areas). Every window must be rated for at least that.
  • AS 2047 label on each window showing the maker and its rated performance. Certifiers and inspectors look for it.
  • Glass to AS 1288: safety glass (toughened or laminated) where the standard requires it, and the right thickness for the size and wind load. The glass should be marked.
  • Energy values: a U-value and SHGC for each window, so your NatHERS assessor or BASIX certificate can use real figures instead of conservative defaults. Rated values come from schemes such as WERS (run by the Australian Glass & Window Association).
  • Bushfire: if your block has a BAL, the windows and glass must meet AS 3959 for that level.
  • Shop drawings you sign before production: sizes, opening direction, glass, hardware and colour for every frame.

Duties and customs

Windows and doors coming into Australia pay customs duty and GST at the border, and some aluminium products from some countries also carry anti-dumping or countervailing duties. In 2026 the Anti-Dumping Commission began an investigation (case 691) into aluminium windows and doors from China and applied provisional securities from October 2026. A cheap quote that leaves these out can grow at the port. Ask whether the price is landed: freight, insurance, clearance, all duties and GST, and delivery to site.

Freight and delivery

  • Frames should be crated or framed with corner protection, glass panels separated, and each item labelled to the window schedule.
  • Check who unloads on site. Large door panels and fixed glass are heavy; plan for enough people, a forklift or a crane truck.
  • Inspect on delivery and photograph any damage before signing, so a transit-insurance claim is straightforward.

How we handle it

Our quotes are landed, with every duty and GST included and delivery to your site. We send the AS 2047 test reports and energy data for the series on your quote, and every frame is drawn on shop drawings for you to sign before it is made. See the standards explained and how it works.

Questions

Is it legal to import aluminium windows from China to Australia?

Yes, if the windows meet AS 2047 and the glass meets AS 1288. Your building surveyor will want the AS 2047 test report for the series and labelled windows, wherever they were made.

What paperwork do I need for imported windows?

An AS 2047 test report from an accredited lab for each series, AS 2047 labels on the windows, AS 1288-compliant glass, U-value and SHGC figures for the energy report, and BAL compliance if the site is bushfire-prone.

Do imported windows attract anti-dumping duty?

Some do. Since October 2026 provisional anti-dumping securities apply to some aluminium windows and doors from China (case 691). A landed quote should already include every duty.

What is a NATA test report?

A test report from a laboratory accredited by NATA, Australia’s accreditation body. Overseas labs recognised under the ILAC arrangement are generally accepted too; check with your certifier.

Who checks that windows comply?

Your building surveyor or certifier, as part of the building permit and inspections. They rely on the test reports, labels and glass markings.
